Speaker Series: 2023 Why all the fury around ESG, and what is the future of Sustainable Investing – Colin Melvin
What a fun and engaging Speaker Series last Thursday – a big thank you to Colin Melvin for coming and enabling a conversation around ESG and sustainable investing! For anyone who couldn’t attend – check out the sum-up below:
Colin spoke about the controversy of ‘ESG’ stemming from people limiting issues to just those three letters, instead of representing everything material underneath the sustainable umbrella and realising the opportunity for sustainable wealth creation. Asset managers regularly overuse the term ESG to sell investment products and disguise their uncertainty, and often have misunderstood their clients’ interest in sustainable investments.
The relationship between capitalism and sustainable investing is also an interesting one. There is dysfunction at the heart of capitalism of short-term goals and returns, instead of focusing on the quality and longevity of investments. While capitalism is the best engine we have for wealth creation, it does need the proper restraints, direction, and ownership for it to have the most effective and sustainable output. In terms of future outlook, a better understanding of the externalisation of benefits and costs, i.e., environmental pollution or the cost of relocation of assets, is a step in the right direction for future growth in the sector and the broader economy.
